Use monitoring to decide when action is needed

Record daily and monthly energy from the inverter portal and compare it with recent clear days, seasonal expectations and—if available—a nearby reference system. Weather changes output, so one cloudy day is not evidence of a fault. Look for persistent drops, string imbalance, repeated inverter alarms or a sudden change after construction, a storm or roof work.

Owners should retain administrator access rather than depending entirely on an installer's account. Configure alerts and make sure the inverter clock, site capacity and tariff assumptions are correct. A simple maintenance log should include date, generation, alarm code, cleaning, photographs, technician and parts replaced. This record supports diagnosis and warranty claims.

How often should panels be cleaned?

There is no universal schedule for Pakistan. A home beside an unpaved road, industrial site or agricultural field can soil faster than a high roof after regular rain. Lahore smog, Karachi salt and dust, dry interior conditions, bird activity, tilt and access all change the answer. Inspect visually from a safe location and use production evidence.

Clean when soiling causes a meaningful, persistent loss or creates concentrated deposits such as bird droppings. Frequent washing without evidence wastes water and increases roof exposure. Rain may remove loose dust but does not always clear bonded dirt. Document output before and after cleaning so future frequency is based on measured benefit.

Safe panel-cleaning method

• Use a trained person with safe roof access and fall protection where required.
• Follow the module and installer instructions; isolate equipment only through the approved procedure.
• Work during a cool period and avoid thermal shock from cold water on hot glass.

Inverters also need ventilation. Keep required clearances, filters or vents clean according to the manual, and prevent direct water exposure. Utility rooms should not become sealed hot cupboards. Review temperature and derating alarms; repeated thermal shutdown can reduce energy and signal poor location or blocked airflow.

Monsoon and storm inspection

Before the wet and windy season, inspect accessible mounting fasteners, corrosion, rail alignment, clamps, cable support, rooftop penetrations and drainage. Do not tighten bolts randomly: use the specified torque and sequence. Loose or over-tightened clamps can both create risk. Verify that cables cannot flap, rub against sharp metal or sit in standing water.

After a severe storm, inspect from a safe location before approaching the array. Look for displaced modules, broken glass, loose metal, hanging cable, roof leakage or debris. If anything appears unsafe, isolate only using the documented shutdown procedure and call the installer. Never touch wet, damaged wiring or a fallen conductor.

Electrical preventive maintenance

Periodic technical inspection can include visual checks, connector condition, cable support, enclosure seals, earthing and bonding, protection devices, labels, inverter logs and—where justified—electrical measurements. The scope and interval depend on system size, environment, manufacturer instructions and applicable standards. Thermography can help identify abnormal heating when performed and interpreted correctly.

Do not mix connector brands or replace fuses and breakers with a different rating because they fit. Repeated trips require diagnosis. Retain the single-line diagram, string layout and original settings so a technician can compare the installed condition with the approved design.

Battery maintenance for hybrid systems

Follow the battery manufacturer's temperature, ventilation, state-of-charge and firmware requirements. Review usable capacity and cycle history rather than judging health only from the displayed percentage. Keep combustible storage away, protect equipment from water and restrict access. Swollen, hot, leaking, odorous or damaged batteries require immediate professional attention.

Battery warranties commonly depend on time, cycles, throughput, temperature and allowed operating limits. Keep monitoring records and do not change charge voltages or communication settings without an authorised procedure. Plan for capacity fade: the backup duration available in year five may be lower than on commissioning day.
